Wooden Ale Tankard
A type of jug or covered mug, sometimes called a skål. This decorated vessel was probably created as a gift to commemorate an important event, like a wedding. I think the painted initials are “FPP” and the date, which is much clearer, is “1836”. Made from carved wood staves, wrapped with split branch banding - the handle and cover also being carved, all of it painted red, white and blue (oxidized to green). Carved into the bottom is the date “1712” …I have no idea why. The wood is probably beech and pine. 6 3/4th inches tall, 3 ½ inches wide at the base. The blue bands and handle have paint loss and the topmost band is loose. As you can see in the pictures, the painted decoration around the mid-section has darkened over time. Swedish, dated “1836”.
