18th Century Paw-foot Candlestick
18th century paw-footed Candlestick. Brass candle holder with knopped stem, elongated socket, set in a square base with lipped edge, raised on four large paw feet. I bought this from Marilyn Young in 1989 (antiquarian of Kennebunkport, Maine) She said she found it under a false panel in a pantry of a 18th century house she owned on Shore Road in Kennebunkport. I have many books (many!) on early brass, and this seems to be of French origin, first half of the 18th century. Many of these types of candlesticks lost a foot, or two, and were modified to sit flat, sans feet. This one retains its original feet and has great surface quality and a commanding presence. The photos show that the shaft has a very slight tilt and one very tiny line on the lipped edge of the base. Almost 6 ½ inches tall, base is 4 7/8th inches square.
