Pantry Box
Carved with stars within stars, eight stars in all. Lapped and planed construction - fixed with iron nails and tiny wooden pegs. Bittersweet paint with white details. Woods are white pine and poplar. Remnants of a late 19th century varnish and it appears that the original decorator may have used gesso to highlight the smaller stars. Tiny crack in side panel and a most amusing wood/peg repair underneath the top, where the carver dug too deep…original to construction. 8 inches wide, 3 ½ inches tall. New England, 1st quarter of the 19th century.
