Melon Stein
Melonenkrug or Melon-shaped Stein. This type of earthenware was made in Bunzlau, Lower Silesia…an area that was once Germany, but is now Poland. There were many towns in Lower Silesia that made lead-based, brown-glazed pottery with ribbed, melon-like bodies, but somehow it all gets attributed to the town of Bunzlau. The pewter lid with hollow ball thumb lift is engraved “SFMI 1757” or “SFMH 1757”…The glaze is quite bright, overall. The handle has a hairline crack, top and bottom, but I cannot detect any glue. The handle also has an area of glaze loss where it touched another piece in the kiln. As shown in the pictures, there are chips around the foot rim and one on the top rim. The pewter domed lid has a tiny stress crack near the hinge…but it will definitely hold beer, as it has done for 267 years. 10 ½ inches tall, about 6 inches - at its widest point.
